How the international gold spot price actually works

The price you see at the top of this page — and the per-country tables below — all start from a single number: the international XAU/USD spot price. That's the market price for one troy ounce of pure (24K) gold quoted in US dollars on the global wholesale market. Local retail rates anywhere in the world are simply this number converted to the local currency, divided down to retail units (gram, tola, masha, ratti), and adjusted for karat purity.

The wholesale price itself is set continuously by trading on three main exchanges: LBMA(London Bullion Market Association — the gold “fix” published twice daily at 10:30 and 15:00 UK time, the global reference for physical bullion settlement), COMEX (the futures arm of CME Group in New York, where most short-term price discovery happens), and SGE(Shanghai Gold Exchange, the dominant Asian benchmark). These three markets quote essentially the same price within arbitrage tolerances; the “spot price” on Goldify Pro is the composite real-time figure derived from them.

Every retail price worldwide is downstream of this number. When jewellers in Karachi's Sarafa Bazaar publish their daily tola rate, they're converting today's XAU/USD spot to PKR using the morning's exchange rate, dividing by 31.1035 (grams in a troy ounce), multiplying by 11.664 (grams in a tola), then adding their margin for taxes, dealer markup and making charges. Goldify Pro does exactly the first three steps — leaving the local margin transparently to the user or jeweller.

The exact formulas this page uses

1. Spot to per-gram

Start with the international XAU/USD spot price (USD per troy ounce). Divide by the fixed weight constant of a troy ounce in grams.

price_per_gram_USD = price_per_oz_USD ÷ 31.1035

2. Per-gram to per-tola, masha, ratti

The tola is the South Asian retail standard. The masha is one-twelfth of a tola; the ratti is one-eighth of a masha (so there are 96 ratti in a tola). Constants are exact and never approximated.

price_per_tola = price_per_gram × 11.664 # 1 tola = 11.664 g (exact) price_per_masha = price_per_tola ÷ 12 # 12 masha = 1 tola price_per_ratti = price_per_masha ÷ 8 # 8 ratti = 1 masha

3. Local currency conversion

Multiply the USD value by today's mid-market exchange rate to get the local-currency equivalent. The exchange rate Goldify uses is from exchangerate-api.com and refreshes every 60 seconds.

price_per_tola_PKR = price_per_tola_USD × exchange_rate_PKR

4. Karat purity adjustment

Pure gold is 24K. Lower karats are alloyed with other metals for hardness; the karat number divided by 24 gives the purity ratio.

24K = 0.999 (99.9% pure — investment-grade bullion) 22K = 0.916 (91.6% pure — Indian / Pakistani jewellery standard) 21K = 0.875 (87.5% pure — Gulf jewellery standard) 18K = 0.750 (75.0% pure — European jewellery standard) 14K = 0.585 (58.5% pure — North American jewellery standard) price_for_karat = price_for_24K × (karat ÷ 24)

5. Why retail rates differ from this number

The figures on this page are pure metal value. Actual retail rates in any country sit a few percent above because of three layers of cost added on top: import duty / VAT (3% GST in India, 5% VAT in the UAE, 17% sales tax in Pakistan), dealer margin (typically 2–5% on bullion, higher on jewellery), and making charges on jewellery (3–12% of metal value depending on design complexity). When you compare this page's output to a jeweller's quote, expect retail to be 5–15% above the pure-metal value.

What this page does NOT include: local taxes (GST, VAT, sales tax, customs duty), dealer making charges, jewellery design premiums, or coin numismatic premiums. The numbers shown are pure metal valueat international parity — useful for cost-basis calculations, valuation, accounting, and academic research, but not directly comparable to a jeweller's retail quote.

Always verify with your local market: before any significant transaction, confirm the live rate with a reputable bullion dealer in your area. Goldify Pro is for reference and education, not a quote for buying or selling physical gold.

All figures on this page are derived from the international XAU/USD spot price (sourced from gold-api.com) multiplied by daily exchange rates (from exchangerate-api.com) using fixed weight and purity constants.
